Coffee is a necessary part of life, and why not make it as enjoyable as possible? In our testing Lab, we evaluate all types of coffee equipment, from coffee grinders to coffee machines. We score these products on ease of use, price, performance and look. That’s what we take into account when reviewing and ranking the best coffee machines.
Did you know? Our Food Science team also tests coffee beans in our Lab. These experts evaluate beans for flavor, aroma, caffeine content, acidity, sweetness, and bitterness, so you can learn which brands and roasts are the best.
There are so many types of coffee machines out there, which is why we’ve narrowed down the list to the best-performers based on our testing and reviews. Here are our picks for the top 10 coffee machines of 2023:
Cuisinart DCC-1200
This Cuisinart coffee maker offers more features and better technology than our previous pick, the 12-cup Cuisinart DCC-1200. The 14-cup carafe is larger, and the carafe handle is sturdier. And the automated programmability lets you make coffee for 24 hours, including custom time settings, auto-off functionality, and optional ready alert. At the same time, it is programmable with settings for one to four cups of coffee. The brew strength control allows you to select bold or regular coffee flavor, and the built-in water tank is larger, so it’s more convenient to fill. Best of all, the coffee tastes better. It is definitely nowhere near as hot and steamy as our former top pick, but for a pleasant morning pick-me-up in the office or around the house, the Cuisinart coffee maker is hard to beat.

BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup* Programmable Coffeemaker, Black, CM1070B-1
We like the programmable features and the ability to customize the strength of the brew, but we found the removable water tank to be a bit of a pain when filling. There’s still a learning curve to using this coffeemaker, but once you figure it out, it easily makes our favorite cup of joe (really, any).

Ninja CE251 Programmable Brewer, with 12-cup Glass Carafe, Black and Stainless Steel Finish
The Ninja series has been a staple of home brewers for years, and the Ninja CE251 Programmable Brewer continues that tradition. This brewer is a step up from its predecessors, which lacked the programmable timer and auto-off function that the CE251 has. The auto-off function keeps both your water bill and your energy bills down, especially when paired with a Ninja thermal carafe. The programmable timer lets you program brew time down to just 15 minutes, which is ideal if you plan on brewing coffee while you’re at work. The auto-off function works just like the auto-off function on the Ninja Mega Kitchen System, and you can set it so you stop the machine for 16 hours, and it will shut off after 3 hours, so the machine doesn’t run overnight. Ninja claims you’re getting up to 24 cups of coffee per brew, but we found that the coffee was not as good as it is with some of the other brewers we tested. The Ninja CE251 Programmable Brewer is one of the more expensive brewers we tested, but you get a lot more cup capacity for this price than the $250 smaller Ninja models.

Keurig K-Duo Single Serve K-Cup Pod & Carafe Coffee Maker, Black
The Keurig K-Duo Coffee Maker is a great value, both in terms of price and versatility. It brews up to eight cups of coffee at a time, and if you choose the 12-cup carafe option, you can brew up to 12 mugs of coffee. It also brews a 6 oz. cup in addition to the 12-oz. size. The K-cup and K-cup pods are sold separately, but Keurig sells its own brand, and the machine comes with some reusable K-Cup pods. The heating plate is removable for easy refilling, and the carafe-brewing feature is handy if you wake up earlier than you want to brew your coffee. The removable reservoir keeps your coffee hot until the last sip, and the replaceable water reservoir is very large, making this coffee maker very attractive for office use. It’s also very compact: the brewer measures 4.6 inches by 15.8 inches by 9.1 inches, and the water reservoir measures 5.3 by 7.9 by 4.3 inches. Its performance is decent, and its controls are simple and straightforward, but like most other Keurig models, it brews too hot. It’s also more expensive than many of the machines it replaces, and you can’t brew hot water without a K-Carafe accessory, which costs extra.

Mr. Coffee 2129512, 5-Cup Mini Brew Switch Coffee Maker, Black
This compact coffee maker has a sleek and relatively modernistic design. It has a beautiful black finish, and it fits nicely on a counter. It’s also lightweight, making it easy to move, and it incorporates a twist-off carafe that makes it simple to pour and serve. The brewing process takes only four minutes, so while we don’t expect much in terms of flavor, the results are adequate. The carafe is a little smaller than we’d like, and the brew flavor isn’t as strong as we’d like, but the Mr. Coffee Mini Switch is easy to use, easy to pour, and fairly inexpensive.

KIDISLE Programmable Coffee Maker, 10-Cup Drip Coffee Machine with Touch Screen, Glass Carafe, Reusable Filter, Warming Plate, Regular & Strong Brew for Home and Office, Black & Stainless Steel
It s nice to make the coffee first, and then brew it, rather than waiting until the end, but we did prefer the automatic start feature of this model. We loved the old-school touches like the big glass carafe and warming plate, and the programmable timer let you set the programmable 24-hour timer in advance. The coffee is decent, though it had a richer, more chocolatey flavor than the coffee from the Hamilton Beach and Cuisinart we tested. This felt less like a machine and more like a high-end French press, and the wide-mouth carafe made it easy to pour out a cup. The other plus: We had no problem filling and emptying the carafe (although it s not as convenient as the Cuisinart s). The maker also produces much more coffee than the Cuisinart, but it didn t have quite as much control. This model also has no indicator light to let you know when it s brewed, leaving that to the taste. There were complaints about this on other models, so we re happy to report this one works as promised. We didn t have any problems with leaks, either, though the removable filter doens t seal quite as tightly as it should. That being said, we didn t have to refill our container for a week. And though this maker is only available in black or white, we ll take it over some hideous red hue any day.

Ninja CM401 Specialty 10-Cup Coffee Maker, with 4 Brew Styles for Ground Coffee, Built-in Water Reservoir, Fold-Away Frother & Glass Carafe, Black, 50 Oz.
This Ninja coffeemaker doesn’t have as many features as the Breville BDC800XL, but it’s worth it if you don’t want to get bogged down in a complicated interface. The Smart Scoop frother whisk detaches and is dishwasher safe, and the permanent filter holds up to 10 cups. Its programmable settings and adjustable brew sizes didn’t provide many options, but many users like the simplicity of this brewer.

Mr. Coffee Iced and Hot Coffee Maker, Single Serve Machine with 22-Ounce Tumbler and Reusable Coffee Filer, Black
Mr. Coffee, self-described as the world’s #1 single-cup coffeemaker, has been making coffee makers since 196

Keurig K-Mini Single Serve Coffee Maker, Black
The Keurig K-Mini is a compact single serve machine that, thanks to its small size, can fit in nearly any space. It’s extremely simple to use, and lets you brew any cup size between 6 and 12 ounces. The drip tray can be removed to accommodate travel mugs that up to 7 inches tall, and a removable drip tray helps to prevent accidental drips. It has a handy on-lid storage unit, and a small but powerful 4-watt speaker. We like that this coffeemaker has an automatic shut-off feature that turns off the coffee maker after 90 seconds of inactivity, helping to save energy.

Gevi 4 Cups Small Coffee Maker, Compact Coffee Machine with Reusable Filter, Warming Plate and Coffee Pot for Home and Office
The Gevi Coffee Maker has all the features you’d want in a coffee maker, plus a few more. It’s easy to use, has generous capacity, and brews a nice pot of coffee in just a few minutes. The pause and Serve feature is a nice option, as is the heated plate that keeps coffee hot when you aren’t drinking it. The coffee-maker does get a bit noisy after a while, however.

Intro to Coffee Machines: A brief overview of different types of machines and features, such as brew temperature, water filtration systems, and brew-time settings.
The landscape of coffee-making machines is vast these days, with a plethora of models to choose from. From basic, no frills machines that make coffee at the push of a button, to cutting-edge, feature-rich behemoths that offer a cornucopia of customization options, there’s truly something for everyone. However, what sets these machines apart is, of course, their features. Let’s take a look at some of the more common machines and their enticing bells and whistles:
Single Cup Brewers: The quintessentially American coffee maker, single cup brewers have become increasingly popular in recent years. Popular for their portability and ease of use, these machines brew single servings of coffee, in as little as a minute! However, with the increased popularity of single cup machines, a lot of small-scale roasters are going out of business, and many people lament the loss of specialty coffee.
Thermal Brewers: Brewing coffee at temperatures lower than 195 degrees Fahrenheit requires specialized machines designed with coffee in mind. Often times, these machines are called “coffee makers”, however, some vendors like to differentiate themselves by labeling their products as “brewers”. These machines feature internal heating elements, as well as built-in thermal carafes, which allow coffee to steep at optimal temperatures, for extended periods of time. The end result is a deeply flavored, smooth cup of coffee.
Drip Brewers: Traditional drip machines, also known as filter machines, are the most popular types of coffee makers on the market. Their ease of use and affordability make them an obvious choice, especially for first-time buyers. However, in recent years, a lot of these machines have become quite outdated, with their clunky, short paper filters, and rudimentary, turn-and-wait brew cycles. Thankfully, modern machines are equipped with convenient features such as brew-by-volume controls and pre-infusion, which deliver exceptional brews.
French Presses: French presses are another classic, and one of the most popular brewing methods. These machines are designed with a plunger and filter mechanism, which, when properly used, produces a unique, flavorful brew. However, due to its intense extraction process, French press coffee is often quite bitter, which is compounded by the coarse grind required for this method.
All in all, choosing the perfect machine can be quite a daunting task, especially with such a wide variety available on the market. However, with a bit of research and preparation, you can easily narrow down your options, and make an informed decision.
